ENGINEERING CLINIC PROGRAM: University of Hawaii at Manoa
UH-Raytheon 2002-03 Engineering Clinic Team: (Left to Right) Madgy Iskander, HCAC Director; Melvin Jackson, Raytheon, Hee Kyung Kim, Undergraduate Student; Rory Sorensen, Graduate Student; Jeffrey Ikeda, Undergraduate Student, Kam Tou Man, Undergraduate Student; Alison Oasay, Undergraduate Student; Michael Liewlad, Raytheon; Bill Otoide, Raytheon
The Engineering Clinic Program brings together education and industry by placing senior undergraduate engineering students in teams of 4 or 5 to tackle practical engineering design and software development problems proposed by individual corporate sponsors. The engineering clinic teams work under the supervision of both faculty and corporate representatives through weekly meetings, conference calls, and design reviews. All parties benefit from the arrangement: companies invest in engineering’s future and in their own; students earn course credits, receive scholarships, and get hands-on experience with real world engineering problems; faculty make contacts with industry that potentially open new avenues of research; and the University benefits from an engineering curriculum substantially enriched by partnerships with industry.
